Louisiana announces 2012 visitor numbers

Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne announced that 2012 shattered previous tourism records, including pre-Katrina years. According to industry statistics, Louisiana attracted 26.3 million visitors in 2012, resulting in $10.7 billion in total visitor spending. The $665 million in state tax revenue generated through domestic and international visitors represents a more than 26-to-1 return on investment of state funding.

The Louisiana Office of Tourism in conjunction with Collinson Media is producing the Louisiana Meeting Planners Guide, a comprehensive publication that highlights the wide array of convention and meeting facilities, exceptional hotels and incredible venues that make Louisiana a great host for meetings and conventions. The deadline for ads and listings has been extended to May 17. Facilities that offer 5,000 square feet of meeting space or more for conferences, conventions, meetings and group business qualify for a listing in the guide. The guide will be distributed to more than 35,000 meeting planners throughout the country. Complete and submit the listing form by May 17 to take advantage of this opportunity in order to showcase your destination or facility.   New Orleans tourism leaders unite to unveil Tricentennial Plan
Breaking Travel News-An alliance of New Orleans area tourism leaders and stakeholders announced the formation of the Tricentennial Consortium and presented a Tricentennial Plan. The plan includes a holistic vision to be implemented in the next five years that will create thousands of jobs, increase tourism demand, spur economic development and ensure the continued growth of New Orleans' economy.

  Louisiana Soundtrack Experience
The Louisiana Office of Tourism and Oxford American held the Louisiana Soundtrack Experience in Lafayette. Corey Ledet and C.C. Adcock preformed at the event, Cajun Seasoning: Zydeco Rhythms in the Heart of Acadiana.

The next event, Great Balls of Fire: Delta Blues and Rock & Roll in Jerry Lee's hometown, will be held in Ferriday on Aug. 3.   Louisiana tourism delegation calls on Washington, D.C
Louisiana was represented in the Destination: Capitol Hill travel advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C. Kyle Edmiston, Louisiana Office of Tourism; Darienne Mobley, LTPA; Shelley Johnson, Lake Charles CVB; Monty Hurley, Creole Nature Trail; and Denise Thevenot, Louisiana Tax Free Shopping called on Louisiana's congressional delegation to secure support for tourism policy issues. The annual event brought more than 300 travel professionals from all segments of the industry to the nation's capital. Important issues that were discussed included an improved visa policy, including temporary worker visas; reauthorization of the Travel Promotion Act, which established Brand USA; transportation infrastructure; and governmental meetings and conferences.

  Mobley elected to U.S. Travel Association's board of directors
Darienne Mobley, co-executive director of LTPA was elected to serve on the U.S. Travel Association's board of directors. She joins the board as an at-large director with her term beginning this month and ending in 2015. The board of directors oversees and governs the association, manages its business, guides its direction and administers the disbursement of funds.

MSN Money - As part of its fiscal 2014 budget request, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is looking for new ways to fund more stringent security. One proposal is to charge Canadians a fee to enter the U.S. by foot, car or train.


  Twitter's new keyword targeting system 'vital' tool for marketers
ClickZ - Twitter has unveiled a keyword targeting system to give marketers the ability to target users based on the words they tweet. The system allows for marketers to pinpoint users based on the context of the words they send out through their account. Commentators say the feature is an advantage because of Twitter's ability to reach consumers in real time.

  2013 TTRA International Conference
This year's Travel and Tourism Research Association International Conference will be held in Kansas City June 20 - 22. Conference topics include mobile traveler, data visualization, air route development, movies and film, forecasting, qualitative research, tourism tax incentives, international research and culinary tourism.
