IMPORTANT NOTE: First drafts should be submitted well in advance of the above final draft deadlines to allow for revisions and requests for additional information if needed. Please allow up to 45-60 days for DHP’s review of a first draft. The number of drafts needed will vary by project.

Nominations will be scheduled for National Register Committee Meetings only after each draft is fully reviewed and determined ready for an agenda (per schedules) by the NR Coordinator. Submissions cannot be fully reviewed until all photographs, photo keys, maps as well as a well-developed argument for Criterion and Areas of Significance with supporting bibliography are in hand. Incomplete drafts will not be placed on an agenda.


Required Materials and Guidance for National Register Nominations

The following materials are required as part of the completed nomination packet:

*Note: The National Register Nomination Forms have been updated. Please ensure you are using the most recent versions.

  1. A draft of your National Register Nomination Form in a Microsoft Word Document:  National Register Nomination Form 
      • The submission should be a digital copy of the nomination form and can be submitted via cd, email, or through an online sharing website (Dropbox, etc).
      • See our  National Register Manual for step-by-step guidance in filling out the National Register Nomination Form.
  2. Additional required forms:
      1.  Submission Checklist
      2.  Ownership Verification Form
      3.  Political Representation List
      4.  Copyright Form
  3. Maps
      1. Topographic Map
      2. Imagery/Boundary Map
      3. Sketch Map 
      4. Legal Property Description ( example) or Plat Map

  4. Photographs
      • Digital Photographs:  Photo Guidelines, Nomination Photo Tips 
      • See our  National Register Manual ("National Register Photos" beginning page 30) for complete photo requirements, including file naming requirements.
      • All digital photographs (TIFFS and JPEGS) should be burned to a CD, jump drive, or shared via an online file sharing website (Dropbox, etc)
      • Photos failing to meet these requirements will be rejected, with the accompanying nomination placed on hold until proper photographs are received. Contact the National Register Coordinator if you have any issues taking the correct quality photographs.

General Guidelines: 

  • The length of a presentation for an individual resource must not exceed 10 minutes and must be no more than 10 PowerPoint slides. 
  • The length of a presentation for a historic district must not exceed 15 minutes and must be no more than 15 PowerPoint slides.
  • Images must be used in the presentation. The number of images is not limited as long as the presentation does not exceed the time or slide limit.
  • Text may be used to make additional points; however, text is not required for every image used.
  • Make sure the text is large enough to be easily read. 
  • The design and background color of each slide, including font type, can be whatever you would like it to be as long as it is readable. 

For all Resources, include:

  • the date of the resource's construction
  • location map (see template below)
  • discussion of setting, if appropriate
  • level of significance
  • summary of reason for significance
  • brief physical description including stylistic features and building type
  • brief discussion of alterations and integrity
  • for districts, a brief discussion of contributing and non-contributing resources
